July 11, 2010 The road to Homer, Alaska

I'll be brief as it is 1:00 am here 5:00 at home, and I am tired. We left Wasilla today and drove 263 miles to Homer, Alaska. Homer is at the end of the Kenai Peninsula. We drove straight through to get here. We passed through interesting looking towns like Soldotna, Kenai, the road to Seward, Cooper Landing, Sterling, and Ninilchik. We will visit them on the return trip later in the week. We are going to stay here 2 or three nights.
During the drive down we passed through several types of terrain. Mountains, along bays and rivers, forest areas, and finally the Homer Spit. The Homer Spit is a narrow strip of rocky land extending into Kachemak Bay. It was cloudy when we left but the skys cleared steadily all day until we had clear blue skies in Homer.
I keep saying this, but we saw some of the most amazing scenery today we have seen. Words can't describe driving through the mountain pass after Anchorage with Cook Inlet running on one side of the road and beautiful mountains, with snow in places, on the other side.
As we were driving down the Kenai we were in forest areas and suddenly we could see the bay just beyond the trees and volcanic mountains beyond the bay. Sometimes we would be less than a quarter of a mile from the bay and couldn't tell it because we were in a forest. Then we came into Homer and we could not believe our eyes. This place is amazing!! We hadn't been here 30 minutes and we saw a bald eagle. If you look on the picture with the house in it, that is an eagle on top of it.
As we explore the area tomorrow I'll tell you more and try and get better pictures. Til then we are living large in Homer, AK.
