The Start of the Alcan (Alaskan Highway)
We went back to the Mile 0 monument and took some more pictures. Deatra needed to mail some birthday and sympathy cards and the visitors center provided that service since we didn't know anything about Canadian postage.
We roared out of Dawson City down the Alcan. In a few miles we made a side detour to visit an old bridge located on a section of the Alcan that has since been routed around to keep heavy vehicles off of the bridge. The name of the bridge is the Kiskatiwan River bridge. It is 531 feet long, very high up, and built totally of wood. I drove across it and got out and took some pictures to share. We traveled in the foothills of the Northern Rockies all day with Aspens and Canadian Fir trees lining the road as far as you could see.
When I filled the gas tank this morning we got 7.78 mpg which is not bad but lower than the last because of the speed I was driving. Today I drove 60mph or less about all day. When I filled up it got 9.52 mpg. You can not ask for better than that. I am trying to conserve due to the cost of fuel. Yesterday I paid $3.47 per gallon. Today I paid $4.04 for the first tank and $4.57 for the last. Remember my calculations; 1 mpg increase compensates for $1.00 a gallon increase in gas price.
This afternoon Deatra got a beautiful picture of the long road leading toward Mt. Yakatchie. What made is so special was the rainbow that was in front of Mt. Yakatchie. I can't wait to post it. Tonight we don't have internet or phone service.
We are camped in a postcard. We are parked beside of the Kledo River about 30 miles outside of Ft.Nelson. We are in the middle of no where yet 6 other campers have pulled in the gravel lot where we are. We are in the wilderness for sure, it is great!!!
Tomorrow we are heading to Muncho Lake and we will see where we end up after that. Good night John Boy.
